The Road Transport Department (JPJ) has stipulated that any addition to the panel structure of a vehicle carrying a load exceeding its body length must comply to the specifications set out in this guideline to ensure that the construction of the structure is safe, in order and in accordance to standard.
Rear drawer is a panel structure that is mounted on the rear end of a vehicle carrying a load exceeding its body length and indivisible (rigid). Whereas, an extension steel structure is mounted to support the weight and movement of the rear drawer either in static or dynamic condition. The main purpose of installing this rear drawer is to serve as a warning marker for other road users that the vehicle is carrying a long load.
The rear drawer installed is required to be solid and stable in order for the vehicle to be safely driven and not endangering other road users.
To provide guidelines, specifications and regulations on the mounting of a rear drawer to a vehicle carrying a load exceeding the vehicle body length.
4.0 CONDITIONS FOR CONSTRUCTION
4.1. Vehicles that are permitted to be mounted with rear drawer are of the rigid decontrolled vehicle category (BDM of 5000kg and below only) and of the following body type:
a. Rigid General Cargo Lorry (LRA)
b. Rigid Dumper Tipper Lorry (LRD)
4.2. The installation of rear drawer is not permitted for a vehicle already been modified to extend the wheelbase.
4.3. Vehicle with a body length exceeding 6200mm is not permitted to install rear drawer.
4.4. Vehicle with a wheelbase length exceeding 4600mm is not permitted to install rear drawer.
4.5. The calculation for the maximum length of the rear drawer permitted to be drawn out must be based on ROH length at 50% of the wheelbase length even though the vehicle's ROH length is lesser than 50%, (refer to example of calculation in para. 6)
4.6. The modification made to a vehicle must comply to this Guidelines without the need of approval from Road Transport Department.
5.0 SPECIFICATIONS OF EXTENSION STEEL
5.1. The method of determining the overall length of a constructed rear drawer is as follows:
5.1.1. Not exceeding 80% of vehicle wheelbase length as shown in diagram 5.1.1; or DIAGRAM 5.1.1
5.1.2. Based on the vehicle Gross Combined Weight Rating (BDM).
a) BDM 2500KG – 5000KG
The maximum length of 1000mm is calculated from the outermost point of the tail gate up to the outermost point of the rear drawer as shown in diagram 5.1.2(a).

Panjang extension steel ke dalam… = The length of extension steel inside the sub-frame must be longer than the maximum length of the extension steel that is protruding out.
Length = The extension steel maximum length 1000mm
b) BDM 2500KG and below
The maximum length of 500mm is calculated from the outermost point of the tail gate up to the outermost point of the rear drawer as shown in diagram 5.1.2(b).

Panjang = Maximum extension steel length 500mm
Calculation example of permitted rear drawer maximum length:
Total ROH = 80%
BDM = 3500KG
Wheelbase = 3300mm
Original ROH = 1650mm
First Option : 1000mm
Second option : 80% of wheelbase length
Wheelbase length x 80%
3300 x (80/100) = 2640mm
Drawn out Rear Drawer = (80% wheelbase length) – Original ROH
= 2640 – 1650
Based on the calculations above, the permitted rear drawer length is 1000mm or 990mm.
BDM = 5000KG
Wheelbase = 4200mm
Original ROH = 2100mm
First Option : 1000mm
Second Option : 80% of wheelbase length
4200 x (80/100) = 3360mm
Drawn out rear drawer = (80% of wheelbase length) – Original ROH
= 3360 – 2100
Based on the calculations above, the permitted rear drawer length is 1000mm or 1260mm.
Based on the calculations, the vehicle owner is given the flexibility to choose between option 1 or option 2 depending upon the wheelbase size and the length of load being carried.
Important note: The calculation should be based on ROH length to be 50% of wheelbase length even though the vehicle ROH length is less than 50%.
5.2. Extension steel can be mounted on the body floor sub frame or chassis main frame.
5.3. The installation of extension steel must have at least 3 locking pin and the gap between each locking pin must be at least 200mm. The purpose of this is to lock the movement of the rear drawer and extension steel especially when the vehicle is moving.
5.4. The extension steel should be equipped with a safety lock so that the movement of the extension steel is locked when pulled to reach maximum permitted length.
5.5. Extension steel must be painted with a white fluorescent colour.
5.6. Steel chain should be mounted on the rear drawer to support the weight of the load. The mount should be neat and solid.
5.7. Additional steel plate must be mounted on the tail gate to support the weight of the tail gate and load.
5.8 Minimum specifications for extension steel used must fulfil the following criteria:
Tinggi…= Height (h) = min. 80.0m
Lebar… = Width (b) = min. 40.0mm
Ketebalan = Thickness (t) = min. 3.0mm
6.0 REAR DRAWER SPECIFICATIONS
6.1. The width of rear drawer must not exceed the width of the rear end of the vehicle and the height of the rear drawer must not exceed the height of the side board of the vehicle.
Lebar Tidak… = Width Not Exceeding the Width of Vehicle
Tinggi Tidak… = Height Not Exceeding the Height of Side Board
6.1. Rear end of rear drawer should be marked with reflective sticker (type 5) and reflective stripes (type 1) MS 826 and equipped with brake lights, night lights and signal lights.
6.2. The position of reflective sticker, reflective stripes, brake lights, night lights and signal lights is as shown in diagram 6.4.
6.3. License light plate number should be installed to the rear drawer as shown in diagram 6.4.
6.5 The size of the brake lights, night lights, and additional signal lights should be larger than the original size.
7.0 SPECIFICATIONS AND MOUNTING METHOD Retro-reflective Marking (MS 828)
7.1 Specification for Reflector Stripes Type 1

7.2. Specification for Reflector Sticker Type 5
7.3. Stickers can be affixed with a gap in between (a) provided that the gap between each light reflecting stickers must not be more than 50% of the length of the stickers, which should not exceed 150mm for stickers type 5 (one colour only) or continuous pattern (b)
7.4. The gap in between the stickers should be consistent.
7.5. The sticker should be affixed on a practical surface that is easily seen and reflected so as to meet basic installation requirement.
7.6. The installation method is as shown in diagram 7.6

8.0 METHOD OF LOADING
8.1. When using rear drawer, the load should comply with the following conditions:
i. The load carried should not exceed the vehicle Gross Combined Weigth Rating (BDM);
ii. The position of the load must be in parallel, even and contained within the enclosure of vehicle body;
iii. The load need to be tied up neatly, firmly, securely and orderly;
iv. Rear drawer is only allowed to be drawn out when carrying loads exceeding the vehicle body length. Rear drawer should be pushed inside the vehicle body completely, if the vehicle is not carrying a long load.
Muatan berada… = The load is contained within vehicle enclosure, in parallel, even and stacked position
Panjang muatan…= The load length exceeds the vehicle body length
8.2. The following are the conditions for carrying inclined loads
I. The mounting of H-bar is required to restraint the load except for tipper dumper vehicle;
II. The load must be tied up neatly, firmly, securely and orderly to the H-bar;
III. The length of the load strapped to the H-bar must not exceed the cab length;
IV. The usage of nylon rope to strap the load IS NOT PERMITTED. The load need to be tied up neatly, tightly and securely using a strap belt
For the purpose of enforcement, any vehicle having found installing the rear drawer additional structure without complying to these guidelines shall be penalised.
